Los Angeles-based interior designer Stefani Stein’s approach to design embraces the idea that every client and space is unique, no matter the project’s size or scale. In 2014, she founded her eponymously named firm and began offering full-service interior architecture and design with an emphasis on a relaxed, yet refined, aesthetic. Using the architectural bones of each project, Stein designs inspiring interior spaces while paying close attention to detail to create one-of-a-kind spaces. She loves working closely with specialized craftspeople and artisans who help steer the narrative of each undertaking from conception to completion. Most recently, Stein launched a luxury wallpaper brand, August Abode, that features a collection that mimics her signature style, love of travel, and the relaxed California lifestyle. Today Stefani is joining us for Friday Five.
1. Music
Music is woven throughout my day, I constantly shuffle playlists for different seasons and activities. It is also a component of my design process. As I develop a concept for a project, the colors and mood start to form, along with songs that embody the vibe of the space. I think it is equal parts design informing the playlist and the playlist informing the design. By the time a project is complete, I will have created a playlist that has become the soundtrack I associate with the space.
2. Gardens
Travel is such a source of inspiration for me, I love visiting museums and experiencing the food and culture of each city. However, I most look forward to touring the local gardens. I’m constantly in awe of and inspired by nature, both in the wild and groomed. My travel memories always gravitate back to the flora of each region – the Boboli Gardens, Belvedere Gardens, and Chelsea Physic Garden are some recently visited favorites. Touring the grounds at Fortuny was also a treat, the steps of the pool are like lily pads radiating into the water. And of course, being a California native, we are fortunate enough to be able to visit The Huntington Gardens, Lotus Land, and Big Sur with just a short drive. Up next on my travel agenda is the Shin-en Gardens in Kyoto.
3. Ritual
My mornings are the foundation of my day. The wrong energy can throw off my entire day, so I have a morning ritual that keeps me grounded. I have a cup of matcha or cacao, read the news, and meditate. Partway through my dogs always come to find me and we do a morning cuddle session. It is the best way to start the day!
4. Henne Organics
I recently discovered Henna Organics and now don’t know what I did without it, the Lip Mask and Serum are absolutely divine. I often visit construction sites and the dust makes my hands and lips terribly chapped. While dry hands were easier to solve, it took ages to find the right lip treatment. There is a magical ingredient called arctic cloudberry oil – the scent is lovely and your lips are silky soft afterward.
5. Pajamas
I’m obsessed with being comfortable. And, for me, there is nothing better than a pair of pajamas or loungewear that are both soft and stylish. My absolute favorites are the silk robes by Stevie Howell and the cashmere sets by Naked Cashmere.
