9 Best Quiet 4000-Watt Generators in 2020

When it comes to buying generators, the thought of the noise alone puts off most people.

And it can go to a point where they would rather stay in the dark during a power cut than invest in a generator and enjoy all the conveniences it brings.

However, the truth is that generators from reputed brands that are within the range of 3500-4000 watts don’t even produce that much sound! That’s why so many people rely on them to power up their essential home appliances like refrigerator, lights, television, water pumps, etc. as well as to electrify their RV or campsite.

Given that 4000-watt generators are popular, we decided to test and review a few of them. And after spending close to 100 hours testing and measuring, we’ve arrived at the conclusion that there’s no one product that would suit everyone.

So, to help you pick out the best 4000-watt generator, we’re going to review 10 of the best in the market today. Let us assure you that in addition to being top-notch in performance, none of these products are loud enough to drive the neighbors away.

Let’s begin!

Quiet 4000-Watt Generators

  1. Pulsar 4000W Portable Quiet Inverter Generator

Since we’re greatly concerned with the potential level of sound a generator can create, our first pick for you would be a product having “Quiet” in its name. How convenient! The Pulsar Inverter Generator is a great product for many reasons apart from its low-noise operation and can be the perfect choice if portability and convenience are two things that you prioritize.

Pulsar 4,000W Portable Gas-Powered Quiet Inverter Generator...
  • 4, 000 peak watts/ 3, 500 running watts
  • Capable of up to 15 hours of extended operation at half load...
  • Convenient wireless remote start allows you to operate the...
  • Quiet operation (63 db) make it virtually silent from just...

Why did we like it?

To begin, we’d like to state that this generator promises to last up to 15 hours on 3.4 gallons of fuel. Even at half load, that sort of run time is not something many products can boast about. We tested it and found that claim to be true, barring a few instances. This is a generator that runs at 3500W and peaks at 4000W, after all.

Portability and ease of use are two other hallmarks of this model, made possible by the combination of compact design and wireless remote. We took this product outdoors and switched it on/off from a max distance of 70 ft; surprisingly, it worked every time. Thanks to the Stable sine WAVE mechanism, you’re also guaranteed safe electrical power for charging even sensitive devices such as cell phones and laptops.

Oh, since we bragged about the sound level before, you’d be glad to know that it produces up to 63 db, which is practically nothing if you’re sitting 10 feet away from the generator.

What could’ve been better?

There isn’t much wrong with this generator if you don’t take into account the after sales service. We have numerous reports that Pulsar refused to provide warranty work when the customers reported they took it outdoors, for camping. Now, that is unfair considering this model is advertised to be great for outdoor use.

Pros
  • Low noise level
  • Great design that maximizes portability
  • Remote-controlled operation
  • Can last up to 15 hours on half load
Cons
  • Customer care and after sales service could be better
  1. Westinghouse iGen Super Quiet Inverter Generator

Second on our list comes another stellar product, from the reputed Westinghouse. This inverter generator shares many common traits with the first model on our list, including quiet operation and greater portability, but there’s more to it. After using it for a week, we were convinced that this product is as good as the Pulsar model, if not better.

Westinghouse iGen4500DF Dual Fuel Portable Inverter...

  • Features a 5–20R 120V Duplex Household Outlet, an RV-Ready...
  • Led Data Center: Rotating Digital Display Shows Fuel Level,...
  • Extremely Quiet, Extremely Fuel Efficient: as Low as 52 dBA...

Why did we like it?

Although costlier than our first pick, the Westinghouse generator carries enough features to justify the extra dollars. The first big feature being 18-hours runtime (in comparison to 15) with just 3.4 gallons of gasoline. That is impressive, considering it runs at 3700W and peaks at 4500W, making the model safe for a broad range of appliances.

Some other features that made us stop and take note is the LED Data Center, which shows Fuel level, Remaining runtime, and Power output. Not to forget the advanced portability made possible by a telescoping handle and convenient top carrying handles. We took this baby on quite a few trips on our RV and it rarely disappointed.

In case you’re curious about the noise level, let us put your worries to rest and say that it is quieter than the Pulsar. Producing sound as low as 52db, this model is a great choice regardless of where you want to use it.

What could’ve been better?

As great a product this is, we believe it could’ve been a better deal if the customer care service was more responsive. But we’re not saying that from personal experience; rather from the experience of other buyers writing reviews online. Apart from regular wear and tear, you shouldn’t have much problem using it.

Pros
  • Impressive power and portability
  • Produces only 52 db sound, which is very low
  • A whopping 18 hours of run time on half load
Cons
  • Customer service is spotty
  1. Champion 4000-Watt RV Ready Open Frame Inverter

Third on our list comes a rather affordable model from the reliable brand, Champion. This model also advertises itself to be portable and great for tailgating and RVs. Compared to a traditional 3500-watt model, this one also promises to be 20% lighter and 50% more quiet. But does it deliver the promises?

Read about our experience to find out.

  • Wireless remote start: the wireless remote key fob allows...
  • Quiet technology and extended run time: 64 dba is great for...
  • Parallel ready: the optional parallel kit allows you to...

Why do we like it?

This item makes bold promises, sure, but it doesn’t live up to only a few of them. For instance, we didn’t find the product to be 50% quieter compared to similar generators. But that’s not to say it is loud; it produces a max of 64 dBA sound and that is tolerable. What we really liked is the fact that it also runs for an average of 15-17 hours.

Also, the Economy Mode claims to help save fuel and increase life of the engine; we didn’t use the product long enough to say if it’s true, but we have no reason to believe otherwise. We also tried increasing the power output by connecting another inverter of 2800W, but you can also connect an inverter with more power and it should work just fine.

Contrary to the other two brands mentioned above, Champion provides FREE technical support for a lifetime along with a 3-year limited warranty. We’re pretty sure you can make the most of those features, if the need ever arises.

What could’ve been better?

Although this isn’t a huge deal, many people have complained that the noise is higher than advertised and can reach as much as 80 db at full load. If you have a similar experience, try to use it away from crowds as it might anger the neighbors. We, however, didn’t find the noise issue to be too alarming.

Pros
  • Light, portable, and easy to use
  • Comes ready to supply power to sensitive appliances
  • You can connect other inverters
Cons
  • Noise can be higher than 64 dBA
  1. Sportsman GEN4000 Gas Powered Portable Inverter

For those who are looking for a cheaper inverter, the Sportsman GEN4000 can be the best choice for many reasons. Coming under $300, this model packs enough punch to get the job done while not stressing your pocket. We’re putting this generator in fourth place because it is worthy of purchase even though it is not in the same league as the other models.

Sportsman GEN4000, 3500 Running Watts/4000 Starting Watts,...
  • 4,000 Watts Rated, 3,500 Starting Watts; Outlets: 4-120 volt...
  • Runs off of gasoline, 7.0 HP, 4 stroke OHV engine with low...
  • Runs for 10 hours on a full tank of gas (3.6 gal.) at 50%...
  • Recoil Start, Weight: 91 lbs.; Dimension: 23" (L) x 17.5"...

Why do we like it?

First of all, the price of the GEN4000 is something that’s hard to beat. And if you leave aside the price factor, features like Recoil start, low noise, and 10 hours of runtime are impressive to say the least. This is a model that runs at 3500W and peaks at 4000W, so nothing much different there; the difference, however, is in the engine that is 7.0HP and EPA approved.

Anyone who’s worried about noise shouldn’t be so because it has a decibel rating less than 69. Though speaking from personal experience, we did notice the noise to go higher to an extent; we can’t give you the exact number. However, if you’re planning to run it at 50% load, noise shouldn’t be a factor.

Also, portability is something we admire about this model, as it weighs 91lbs. With this, we ran multiple lights, fridge, Microwave, TV, etc. without any hiccups. We think this generator by Sportsman is a worthy addition

What could’ve been better?

Well, given the low price tag, you would expect to encounter problems, but it isn’t the case at all. This inverter generator performed well as long as we used it, minus some issues cropping up here and there. The loudness, however, is something you’d have to make peace with from time to time.

Pros
  • Really affordable
  • Offers 10 hours of runtime on half load
  • EPA approved
  • Not very heavy
Cons
  • Can get loud occasionally
  1. DuroStar DS4000S Generator with RV Camping Standby

When you get an overall picture of 4000W inverter generators, you’d start to notice that most of them have few specific features in common. The DuroStar DS4000S, for instance, carries many important factors from the previous models such as greater portability, multiple outlets, low-noise rating, etc. But these aren’t all; read our review to find out more.

  • POWERING EVERYONE ANYWHERE: The DS4000s is EPA and CARB...

Why do we like it?

Well, this generator is a worthy purchase because it brings quite a lot of features from more expensive models like the Pulsar 4000 and Westinghouse. To start off, we must applaud the efficiency of this model as we can power everything, from sensitive items like phones and laptops to high-performance power tools.

Like others, this one also runs at 3300W and peaks at 4000W; it has a 8-hour runtime at half load and burns through 3.96 gallons of gas. While these aren’t figures to be ecstatic about, the product makes up for it by weight, as it measures only 94lbs. We also liked how the steel frame has four-point isolated motors to keep the noise low.

What could’ve been better?

Personally, we think it would’ve been better if we were able to get a bit more run time, given how much this thing costs. However, 8 hours is plenty for most people and shouldn’t be counted as a con. The only other issue we can think about is parts being fault; we didn’t experience it though.

Pros
  • Quiet operation
  • Good portability factor
  • Doesn’t cost too much
  • Powers a broad range of appliances
Cons
  • Runtime could’ve been more
  1. WEN 56475 Portable Generator with Electric Start

The WEN 56475 is in a similar price range as the DuroStar DS4000s and has similar features, give or take a few. It is a sturdy machine that’s high in portability, extra thanks to the wheel kit, and comes with an electric start for added convenience. Since portability is a big selling point here, we decided to take this model of a camping trip to test it out.

WEN 56475 4750-Watt Gasoline Powered Portable Generator with...
  • Digital readout helps manage oil changes and maintenance...
  • Features electric start, low-oil shutdown, an automatic...
  • CARB & EPA III meet requirements for sale in all 50 states
  • Includes wheel kit and foldable handles for easy transport

Why do we like it?

Like mentioned before, this model comes with an electric start, which is great because the last thing you’d want to do outdoors is use pull starts. The keyless electric start makes the generator turn on with just the press of a button and generates enough power to run TV, lights, refrigerators, and other essentials. We tried the generator at home too, so we can vouch for it.

With a 4 gallon gas tank and 223cc engine, this machine can last up to 11 hours at half load. Now, that is impressive if you compare to only 8-hours of the previous model. By the way, this isn’t a 4000W generator if you go by technical terms; it has 3750 rated watts and provides 4750 surge watts. Other interesting features are low-oil shutdown, overload protection, and auto-voltage regulator.

What could’ve been better?

Honestly, we didn’t notice any flaw with this generator and can only bring you negative experiences of other users. And most of their opinions revolve around the product either failing to start or stop working all of a sudden. Their warranty terms and conditions can also be an issue if you’re unlucky.

Pros
  • Electric start button
  • Powers a host of appliances safely
  • 11 hours run time
Cons
  • Availing warranty could be a problem
  1. Westinghouse iPro4200 Portable Inverter Generator

On the seventh spot, we’ve got another product by Westinghouse, which is an excellent product for those who are looking to spend a little “extra.” This too is a gas-powered model that’s designed to work for both residential and commercial applications. Read about our experience to learn more.

  • Powered by a 212 cc Westinghouse 4-Stroke OHV Engine...

Why do we like it?

There is very little NOT to like about this inverter generator, to be honest. And the best thing about this model is that it can run upto a whopping 22 hours! Yes, that’s right, this is by far the most long-lasting 4000W generator we’ve used and wouldn’t mind recommending. Like other models on this list, this one also runs at 3500W and peaks at 4200W.

Other commendable features include a rugged steel frame, durable tank, low noise, and 3-years manufacturer warranty. These are some of the aspects we took a good look at before ordering and can say that we were pleased. And if you’re concerned about safety, then know that it also has Overload Protection and Automatic Shutoff for Low Oil.

What could’ve been better?

We didn’t find any fault with this Westinghouse generator for as long as we used it. The generator started on the first pull, except one time, and we’re not holding that incident against it. The unit is also easy to move with the wheels but can be challenging without them due to the weight.

Pros
  • Excellent runtime of 22 hours on a 2.6 gallon tank
  • Has the standard safety features
  • Easy to move if you use the wheels
Cons
  • The unit is heavy and bulky
  1. Duromax XP4400E 4400W Portable Generator

If you’re thinking “Wait, this is not a 4000W generator!” then hear us out. Even though you’re right, we can assure you that this model will bring you no inconvenience, especially since it is incredibly affordable. Plus, it has many stellar reviews from people online! Aside from being powerful, this unit brings many interesting benefits to the table.

  • POWERING EVERYONE ANYWHERE: Like all DuroMax generators, the...

Why do we like it?

Well, first let us get the wattage out of the way. This unit brings enough power to light up both commercial and home appliances, with 3500 running watts and 4400 starting watts. We used it to run everything, be it the AC or refrigerator, and they ran just fine. Although we didn’t get a chance to take it outdoors, we can still say it is portable thanks to the wheels.

This model is powerful! With the 7.0HP DuroMax engine, you get the choice of operating the unit at 120V and 240V simultaneously. Also, did we mention that it is CARB approved and can be used in all 50 states of the US. The Duromax XP4400E is also relatively quiet and can run up to 10-12 on one full tank.

What could’ve been better?

Like other generators, we didn’t experience any problem with this one too (probably because we didn’t use it long enough) but can bring you issues other people have encountered. And the biggest issue seems to be the generator just going *poof!* all of a sudden. Also, some people also reported issues with getting warranty services.

Pros
  • Great value of money
  • Powerful engine
  • CARB compliant
Cons
  • Warranty problems
  1. A-iPower 4000W Gasoline Powered Generator

Last on our list, comes a rather cheaper option for those who want the bells and whistles of an advanced inverter generator at a price of a low-medium level model. Now, you might be thinking, “doesn’t everyone want that?,” well, listen, it comes with a catch.

And the catch is not apparent unless you use it.

Read our review to learn more.

A-iPower 4,000-Watt Gasoline Powered Manual Start Generator

  • 208cc / 7HP OHV, single cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke...
  • High performance alternator provides greater peak wattage...
  • RV Ready. This generator is built with a TT-30R RV outlet...

Why do we like it?

Now, the reason we’re putting this last on our list is because it didn’t perform consistently as expected. But that’s our personal experience only and cannot say with certainty that you’ll face the same. As far as good features go, we’ve got plenty. First of all, it offers a maximum of 12 hours of runtime at 50% load, and that too with a 4.0 gallon fuel tank.

Weighing at 65lbs, this model boasts of great portability and is RV Ready as well thanks to the TT-30R RV outlet. We took this baby out on a few camping trips and it never felt like a humongous task, moving it around. If you’re concerned about durability, you’ll be glad to know that it comes with an all steel fuel tank.

What could’ve been better?

Like we mentioned before, this unit failed to perform consistently as we noticed a couple of times that the auto shut down feature didn’t get triggered when the unit was running out of oil. Also, we think a product like this is always better with automatic start, which you’re not getting here. Again, that was just our personal experience.

Pros
  • Lightweight for greater portability
  • 12 hours of max runtime
  • Doesn’t cost an arm and a leg
Cons
  • Inconsistencies in performance
  • Auto shutdown can be unreliable

4000W Generators Buyers’ Guide

Regardless of which generator you end up buying, knowing how to pick the right one will always work in your favor. After all, as much as manufacturers’ make these models sound simple, there are many moving parts involved and it only takes one or a few to ruin your experience. Then there’s the aspect of your needs and preferences.

So, in this buying guide, we’re gonna break things down so that you understand what features to look out for when shopping for a generator. And we’re sure that by the end, you’ll be more confident about your choice.

  1. Engine

Engine is THE biggest factor when it comes to determining the power a generator produces. Although almost all the 4000W models we’ve reviewed here are gasoline-based, engines can also convert propane into electrical energy.

It’s obvious that a more powerful engine will generate greater electrical current, but the products reviewed here all have either 224cc or 212cc engines as they’re the norm for 4000W models. The engine power and quality is also a huge determining element of a generator’s price, hence you should never go for a cheap model.

  1. Rated and max power output

Even though this topic is on 4000W generators, you may have noticed that most of them actually surge at that Wattage and run at a lower wattage. That brings us to the concept of ‘rated power’ and ‘surge power,’ which is crucial to know about if you want to buy the ideal product.

Whereas rated power denotes the wattage a generator is able to generate consistently, while surge power comes in use when motorized appliances like AC, refrigerators, and pumps come into play. For regular appliances, however, like dishwashers, microwaves, TV, and light bulbs, the standard running wattage is what counts.

  1. Total runtime

You probably also noticed the fact that we always calculated runtime based on half-load and if you were wondering why, let us just say that it is the standard. The runtime typically represents the total time a generator can run on a tank full of fuel at half the rated wattage. Now, the total runtime depends on a few factors, the tank size and motor being the most significant.

You must bear in mind that the runtime will depend on the number of appliances you’re powering at a time and how much wattage they consume in total. So, keep an eye on the appliances that get powered on if you want to maximize the runtime.

  1. Level of noise

Uhh! Who doesn’t despise the noise a generator creates, yet it is something all of us are ready to accept. The question is, to what extent? Thankfully, most modern inverter generators don’t create a whole lot of noise, unless of course you’re dealing with malfunctions. Bottomline: noise is a cause for concern and in many ways, you might not realize them all now.

Say for instance you want to take the generator on a camping trip, how would it feel if it creates enough sound to drive away your neighbours? Even for home use, a generator that creates a whole lotta noise can be problematic. Luckily, most of the generators we’ve reviewed here produce sound on the lower end, ranging from approx 50s to 80s (dB).

  1. Portability

Since convenience has become a huge concern to people nowadays, finding portable generators have become easier. Manufacturers’ have started taking note of what people desire and are coming up with generators that are camping and RV ready. Even though you might be planning to place the generator at home, it doesn’t hurt to keep a light one.

Thankfully, all the 4000W generators reviewed here are not excessively bulky and they do have features that make them easy to carry and move around. Models that are mounted on wheels are especially good if you plan to take them with you.

  1. Number and type of outlets

The type and number of outlets found on your generator determines how many and what kind of appliances you can plug in without resorting to electrical adapters and power strips. Now, the type of outlets your generator should have depends on what kind of appliances you’re planning to plug in.

For standard appliances like the TV, Fridge, Microwave, the standard 120V outlets should suffice; for heavy-duty machines like pumps, 240V 30A outlets might be needed. For an RV, your generator should have an RV-ready 120V outlet. Some generators even come with USB ports for charging electronics like mobile phones, so that’s another added convenience.

Final words

So, now you know about our top picks, it’s time to choose your own. If you ask us, the Pulsar PG4000iSR and Westinghouse iGen on the #1 and #2 spots would be our recommendation, even though they are on the costlier side. They offer considerably longer runtimes, going from 15-18 hours, while not creating an excessive level of noise.

But with that being said, we don’t think any product in this list is “bad” in any way as they all have their fair share of merits and demerits. Which product are you planning to pick?
