What is Mardi Gras?
Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, celebrates the beginning of the ritual of fasting of the Lanten season. The name of the carnival comes from French and literally translates to Fat Tuesday, which is why it is the last day of rich and fatty foods before the fasting begins. New Orleans has become the home of the biggest and most famous Mardi Gras carnival. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the French Quarter to celebrate a night of fun, alcohol and dancing. The carnival is also held in France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Ukraine, Brazil and other countries around the world.

Mardi Gras is famous for many weird traditions. Most notably is probably the throwing of beads necklaces from people standing on the floats to the crowd. In fact, there are so many beads being thrown around that the city of New Orleans expressed its concern for the recycling of all the beads left on the streets after the carnival is over. Another one is the handing of the “key of the city” to a local who has done something for the city. This is a pretty cool tradition because it showcases the appreciation of the locals. And, finally, because this article is focusing on masks, after all, the wearing of masks. This has become a tradition, because of the willingness of people to let loose when their faces are hidden. Now here is a simple DIY for a colorful Mardi Gras mask with crayons
Supplies:
- brightly colored crayons
- wax paper
- pencil sharpener
- iron
- craft paper
- scissors
- hole puncher
- colorful ribbon
- mask template
Instructions:
- Lay out the wax paper and start sharpening the crayons on top of it. Spread out the shavings evenly on the paper.
- Cover them with another sheet of wax paper and place the craft paper on top.
- Iron the paper until the crayons have melted.
- Print out the mask template, place it on top of the paper and trace it onto it. Cut it out with a knife, punch holes on the sides and attach the ribbons on both sides.

Supplies:
- glitter card stock in purple, gold and green
- scissors
- glue gun
- feathers, rhinestones, glitter
- pencil
- paper straws
Trace your hand on the back of the card stock and cut it out
Glue them together as shown in the photo
Cut out the eye holes
Glue a paper straw to the side for a holder and add the decorations you like

Supplies:
- mask
- glitter
- feathers
- Tacky glue
- paintbrush
- glue gun
- scissors
Cover the mask with Tacky glue and immediately start sprinkling with glitter
Make sure the whole mask is well covered with glitter and attach the feathers to the side
